Results of Experimental Intestinal Strangulation Obstruction in Germfree Rats

Experimental low ileal strangulation obstruction has been produced in germfree and conventional rats. The mean survival time was 240 hours in the germfree rats and 44 hours in the conventional controls. 4 of the 10 germfree rats survived 15 or more days, whereas the 10 conventional animals were all dead within 2(1/2) days. The strangulation obstruction fluid from the germfree animals was steril...

Host specificity of filamentous, segmented microorganisms adherent to the small bowel epithelium in mice and rats.

Germfree rats and mice were given by gavage samples of ileal homogenates prepared from conventional rats and mice. Filamentous, segmented procaryotes adhered to the small bowel epithelium in the ex-germfree mice only when the homogenate was made from mouse bowel and in the ex-germfree rats only when the inoculum came from rats. Thus, the filamentous microorganisms are host animal specific.

American trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) in the Caribbean.

Chagas' disease (American trypanosomiasis) is endemic in nearly all Central and South American countries facing the Caribbean basin. Since 1960, reports from the islands of Aruba, Curaçao, Jamaica, and Trinidad have confirmed the presence of Trypanosoma cruzi, blood-sucking triatomine bugs, and wild animals infected with the parasite. It was also established that T. cruzi, triatomine bugs, infe...

Effect of bile acid deconjugation on the fecal excretion of steroids.

The effect of microbiological deconjugation of bile acids on total bile acid and neutral sterol fecal excretion by adult male rats has been studied. A screening method utilizing mice allowed selection of a Clostridium perfringens type A strain, which accelerated cholesterol catabolism in mice. When this species of bacteria was associated with germfree rats, the fecal bile acids were excreted as...
